Thursday’s Side Dish: Furikake

A sprinkling of sea flavors

This dry ingredient condiment is prevalent in Japanese households and cuisine.  It's Japan's version of salt and pepper at the kitchen table.  The Mixed Stew crew found nearly a dozen varieties on the shelves at Lotte Plaza.  Furikake is usually sprinkled over steamed rice or incorporated into sushi meshi to augment flavors.   Sesame seeds, dry seaweed, and dried bonito flakes are among the most popular ingredients in this Furikake.  The Mixed Stew crew purchased a 2 oz jar of “Wasabi Furikake” for $3.99.
