Wednesday's Helping: Spicing Up Beans

Giving it a kick

Nothing embodies "comfort food" like slow-cooked beans. We have several suggestions for spicing up a whole batch. We added chorizos cut into bite-sized pieces but you can also use andouille sausage, linguica, or even hot Italian sausage. A sprinkle or two or paprika, red pepper flakes, dried oregano, or chili powder can also add more flavor depth. Just make sure to make these additions at the very beginning of the cooking process so that the whole pot is seasoned.
