Wednesday’s Helping: Spam Musubi

An all-island favorite

Expect to find this food item in convenience stores throughout Hawaii and Guam.  It’s a regional staple that’s very inexpensive and portable.  Spam gained popularity among Pacific Islanders during the post WWII era.  Traditional Spam Musubi consists of a block of sticky rice and one spam slice that’s wrapped in traditional Japanese nori.  The Mixed Stew crew added omelet-style egg, which aids in making every bite more appetizing.  Other optional additions include: Furikake, takuan, or sliced cucumber.  Spam Musubi can be packed, as a convenient meal item, for long day hikes or lunch at the office.
